A hall for twelve hundred, and classrooms beside the pathshalas
The Assembly Hall is built for convocations, public lectures and classical performance. Its 55 m copper roof spans without internal columns, and the seating bowl is dished so the rear row is level with the foyer: entry is step-free. Cool air comes in low under the seats and rises out through the lantern. Ten exits are spread round the drum, and the west exit doubles as the stage door.
Modern seminar and language classrooms sit beside the traditional pathshalas, not apart from them. Their teak verandas open straight onto the lawns, so a class can move outdoors in fair weather, in the manner of a forest gurukula.
